US President Donald Trump's Middle Eastern envoy, Steve Witkoff, said the US president was trying to avoid armed combat with Iran by building trust with Tehran in comments broadcast Friday. In an interview with digital news anchor Tucker Carlson uploaded on X, Witkoff said that Trump's letter to the Iranian government a few days ago was not a threat.
The US and Iran have long been sworn enemies, and the situation has never been more dire following recent Israeli attacks against targets in Gaza and threats from Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi militia. Trump announced on March 7 that he had written to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling for renewed negotiations regarding the Iranian nuclear program.
He also threatened to use military action, and Khamenei, in a speech broadcast on Friday, stated, "The Americans should know threats will get them nowhere when confronting Iran."But Witkoff, who is defending Trump's overtures, explained to Carlson that the military advantage lies with Trump and that it would be in the Iranians' nature to press for a diplomatic resolution. Witkoff indicated that US talks with Iran persist through "back channels, through several nations and several conduits."Trump, he explained, is "open to a chance to clean it all up with Iran, where they come back to the world and be a great nation again. He wants to build trust with them.
